Direct-to-film printing is the most significant change to small-run custom apparel in the last decade. It removed the two constraints that historically pushed small orders away: screen setup costs and ink color limits. If you have ever been told your six-color design needs a hundred-piece minimum, DTF is the answer you were looking for.
How The Process Works
The design is printed in full CMYK plus white onto a specialized transfer film. Adhesive powder is applied to the wet ink and cured, producing a finished transfer. That transfer is then heat pressed onto the garment, where the adhesive bonds the print to the fabric.
Because there are no screens, there is no setup to amortize. Printing one shirt and printing forty costs roughly the same per piece.
What DTF Does Exceptionally Well
Unlimited colors at no extra cost. Photographs, gradients, watercolor effects, and complex illustrations reproduce faithfully. It also works across an unusually wide range of fabrics — cotton, poly, blends, performance wear, canvas, and most nylon.
- Small runs, samples, and one-off pieces
- Photo-real and gradient-heavy artwork
- Mixed garment orders (different colors and fabrics, one design)
- Names and numbers on team apparel
The Honest Trade-Offs
A DTF transfer sits on the surface of the garment. It is flexible and stretches well, but it will never match the fiber-level softness of a water-base screen print. On a large full-front design you will feel it.
Per-piece cost also stays flat as quantity grows. Around the 60 to 100 piece mark on a simple design, screen printing usually becomes the cheaper choice — we will tell you when you cross that line rather than quietly running the more expensive option.
Care Instructions Matter
Wash inside out, cold, and tumble dry low. Skip the iron directly on the print. Treated that way, a properly pressed DTF transfer holds up through fifty-plus wash cycles without cracking.
The Takeaway
DTF is the right tool for small, colorful, and varied orders. Screen printing still wins on volume and softness.
