The answer is almost always the ink. Water-base, discharge, and plastisol are three very different systems, and picking the right one for your garment and artwork is the single biggest quality decision in a screen print order.
How Water-Base Ink Works
Water-base ink uses water as the carrier instead of plastic. When the shirt goes through the dryer, the water evaporates and the pigment stays behind, bonded into the cotton fibers rather than sitting on top of them. The result is a print you can barely feel — run your hand across it and you mostly feel shirt.
That fiber penetration is also why water-base prints breathe. On a large front print, a plastisol slab can trap heat across your whole chest. A water-base print of the same size lets air move through the garment, which matters a lot for summer events, restaurant staff, and anything athletic.

Where Discharge Printing Fits
Discharge is water-base ink with an activator that removes the garment dye and replaces it with pigment in a single pass. On a dark 100% cotton tee, that means you get a bright, opaque design with no white underbase and no heavy ink deposit. It is the technique behind most premium retail tees you have picked up and thought felt unusually good.
The trade-off is predictability. Different dyes discharge to different base tones — a navy might pull to a warm cream rather than a pure white — so we run tests on the actual garment before committing a full run. It is one more step, and it is worth it.
When Plastisol Is Still The Right Answer
Plastisol has a bad reputation it does not fully deserve. Printed badly it is thick and rubbery. Printed well — thin deposit, correct mesh, proper cure — it is durable, color-accurate, and works on blends and polyester where water-base struggles.
